“18 years ago, my parents made the decision to move to the US. Growing up a Peruvian immigrant I tried really hard to be less Peruvian than American. It wasn’t until a few years ago when I began truly appreciating how rich my culture was. I never even realized the resilience that came with my heritage. I am not the product of colonization but I am made up of all the pieces that survived. So here’s to me, my parents and sister for making a whole entire life out of a suitcase. And here’s to being a college graduate“ - @gianellaghiglino FELICIDADES!!! Shout out to all those who doubted my journey. First generation college graduate and I exceeded the expectation. Proud to be part of the 4% Latino graduates that received a Masters Degree or higher by age 29. I pray that many more in the coming years increase this percentage. Empowering one another is just the beginning; proud to be an educated Mexicana. Another milestone complete & one degree hotter lol ✊🏾👩🏻‍🎓✨ MPA 🎓🎉 #mastersdegree #publicpolicy #administration #latinx #graduate #brownpride #gobeach #storiesofus #mitu #mexicana #2018 #classof2018 #healthandhumanservices

My mother risked it all bringing me here from El Salvador. She did it, so that I could find my voice. She did it, so that I could find my wings. She did it, so that I could fly. This is ours, Ma, my personal warrior. Two degrees—one for you and one for me. . . Check my FB album for more graduation pictures with my squad. . . “This is for all those who believe they can’t, know that we have resiliency in our blood. As a Latina I constitute many stereotypes and am part of many statistics. I’m proud to be a part of 4% of those Latinas who receive a graduate degree and part of the smaller percentage receiving a masters while raising a child. This is for my South Central community who I have always kept in mind while pursuing higher education. Para mi familia. Para mi hija, so that she knows that there’s nothing in this world that can stop her from reaching her dreams ✊🏼🎓” - @stacyyamilet_ congratulations! It's been one year since I graduated from law school and five since undergrad. I'm more thankful than ever for my education. This reflection looking back on this journey I shared in my most recent blog post that I just posted today. I share my 8 year journey and how I feel about my decisions today. The journey through academia was never easy and the sacrifices were one too many. The futher I went in my education, the less represented I feel. And in the legal profession, I still feel the same way. Yet, seeing so many latinxs, people of color, and first generation graduates share their milestone gives me hope that in just a few years we will be represented in more spaces. Being first generation American and born and raised in Mid-City LA, I can attest that with ambition and faith, what's meant to be will always be. You are as smart and as capable as anyone else. Your journey may not mirror others but that's what will make your journey special. Congratulations to the class of 2018. Also congratulations to all those working towards graduating. You have so many people waiting to celebrate your sucesses. • I graduated from law school with a distinction in Public Service. I dedicated 75+ hours providing legal aid at non-profits in LA. My last day of my legal internship last year I appeared in immigration court advocating for a family to remain in the United States. I was successful. • I graduated CSUF cum laude while living on my own, interning, and working. I double majored in English and American Studies. I majored in English because I was undecided at first but figured I love to read, why not read for class credit for 4 years. And American Studies opened my eyes to the social injustice inflicted on: people of color, women, indigenous communities, sexual orientation, disabilites, religion, economic status, and national origin. 🐘💙 #salvadoreña #csuf #lawschool #angelino #latina #storiesofus

The summer before my senior year of high school when I brought Edgar home to meet my dad, he made him promise that he wouldn’t interfere with my school because all my mom and him wanted was for me to get an education and become someone in life. We both promised him I wouldn’t let having a boyfriend keep me from school but to me, after my mom passed away, I felt that everything I did no longer had a meaning because she wasn’t here to witness any of it. I ended up getting pregnant half way through my senior year, flunked out of high school, and instead of starting college that fall, I became a mom at the age of 17 and disappointed everyone in my family. When I was 18 I found a job as a receptionist at the firm I still work at, and my boss would constantly push me to go back to school but I didn’t want to. At 22, I finally decided to go back and get my high school diploma so at 23, while I was 6 months pregnant with Isaac and Isaiah was 5 years old, I graduated high school with my family right besides me. 3 years ago I decided I was going to start college to fulfill that promise that I made to my dad 12 years ago and today, here I am, getting my first college degree. This is for my parents and for my family who has supported me through it all. There’s no way I would have been able to do this without them. “Por ustedes y Para Ustedes” #FirstGeneration #DaughterOfImmigrants #Latinxswithadegree #StoriesOfUs #Classof2018 #TeenMom #BeatingStatistics #BreakingStereotypes

MAN - This is about how we lack empathy, when we can't relate to a situation. We should always keep in my mind every one is unique and even though we can't understand the reason of pain, person is still feeling it. You don't have to understand everything it's not your job, but neither is being an asshole. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #lgbt #transgender #trans #rainbow #man #story #gay #bi #lesbian #love #pain #lgbtstories #idahbt #author #instastories #writersofinstagram #writingprompts #writer #storiesuntold #storiesofindia #storiesofus #loveislove #loveyourself #empathy #understanding #insta #instagood #instagram #follow #like

They said I couldn’t...so I did. I feel so humbled and blessed to have graduated with my masters in Biotechnology from Georgetown! So, here’s to the women that couldn’t because their societies did not allow them to, to my mother that wanted to but was too busy making her daughters’ dreams happen, and for the women that are still struggling to make their educational dreams happen. There’s currently less than 26% of us in STEM careers, let’s make those numbers change! HOYA SAXA! 👩🏻‍🎓 🎉 #thefutureisfemale #WomenInSTEM #SiliconValleyReady #storiesofus
